Area Clinical Director, Nursing

Reports to: Vice President (V.P.) of Business Operations

The Area Clinical Director of Nursing position serves as a consultant to both management and employees on clinical and nursing related issues. The successful Area Clinical Director of Nursing acts as a resource and advisor to employees and managers.  The role listens, advises, and reports on nursing issues to the VP of Business Operations. Communicating needs proactively to the Nursing Team, the Area Clinical Director of Nursing works with the Leadership Team to develop and champion integrated solutions. The position formulates partnerships across shared services to deliver value-added service to management and employees that reflects the business objectives of the organization. The Area Clinical Director of Nursing maintains an effective level of nursing expertise, as well as business literacy and knowledge about Aveanna’s culture and its competition.

Essential Functions

Patient Care Responsibilities

  • Assists Clinical Care Managers in the monitoring of patient care to ensure quality and appropriateness of services
  • Oversees the maintenance of clinical records, reports and records
  • Ensures that patient care is coordinated and managed appropriately by Clinical Care Managers
  • Assists in referral and staffing decisions, evaluating new referrals for admission with recommendations for nursing/ancillary care
  • Performs and provides direct patient care as appropriate and needed
  • Advises and consults with the Vice President of Operations and Chief Nursing Officer on clinical and staffing related issues
  • Maintains open lines of communication with families and physicians and other providers
  • Coordinates admissions, transfers and discharges as necessary
  • Directs clinical services throughout the state
  • Ensures clinical team readiness to admit new patients

Quality and Compliance Responsibilities

  • Participates, supports, coordinates and implements the QI Plan
  • Tracks and trends patient outcomes within responsible area
  • Ensures proper communication between clinical staff, patients, referral sources and payers
  • Maintains and upholds company clinical standards
  • Ensures quality nursing care is delivered in compliance with company policy, state and federal regulatory guidelines and accrediting body standards
  • Ensures quality nursing care is delivered in compliance with Nurse Practice Act
  • Adheres to all company and state reporting standards
  • Maintains awareness of third party payer rules and regulations

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Ensures prompt and efficient fulfillment of company goals and objectives
  • Evaluates and supervises staff based on mutually agreed upon goals in job descriptions
  • Participates in location administrative and clinical call as needed
  • Complies with all company policies
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by supervisor

Training and Education Responsibilities

  • Conducts ongoing evaluation of location nursing personnel and operations; identifies problem areas and recommends corrective actions
  • Mentors Clinical Care Managers and Clinical Directors; promotes professional growth for nursing personnel
  • Ensures appropriate recruiting, hiring, orientation and on-going supervision of nursing personnel (office and field)

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has direct supervisory responsibilities over the Location’s Clinical Care Managers, the direct caregivers and the Location’s Director

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers and smartphones

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This position regularly requires long hours and occasional weekend work as job duties demand


Approximately 75%, travel is within the region during the business day with overnight travel as needed

Required Education and Experience

  • Current Nursing License in state of practice
  • CPR certified, instructor certified preferred
  • Registered Nurse, Bachelor's Degree or Master’s Degree preferred or equivalent experience
  • Three to five years pediatric/neonatal or adult critical care experience preferred
  • Three years of management experience preferred
  • Three years of home care experience preferred
  • Experience in management of patients that require the assistance of medical treatments and therapies that involve infusion, ventilators, and other various modalities preferred
  • Experience working in a Home Health environment a plus
  • Experience working in Pediatrics a plus
